Tears, Flans and Birthdays

****************************************************************************************************************

There’s a birthday in the house !!!!! Woot Woot !!!!!!

Pop on over to our widdle mate and wish her a good one.

This is the wench trying to drag me to the light side with her domestic goddess image. Yesterday, she went to the gym AND did housework. Then dared to e-mail me to gloat. **Rolls eyes**

However, if you visit here, you will see the coven and I are pulling her just as hard to the dark side.

***Don’t fight it Luke. It is your destiny !!! ***

So Scrap meister, here is a little something for your viewing pleasure.

Here’s a pic of Dave for you……..

Your own personal angel……….

And your own personal Bartender.

And here’s your favourite hunk of all time !!!!!!!!!!!

Loves ya gal pal. Mwah <3

Don’t forget to visit Bettina for a birthday message……

I am so happy, I could cry !!!!!!

I am humming Creed’s Arms Wide Open, that is how happy I am.

Yesterday, I made vegetarian flan for lunch.

Here is the recipe for all you Marthas that visit (or Alison Holsts, the kiwi equivalent) So put down your electric stick blenders, and step away from that crockpot.

Shirley’s Vegetarian Flan

1 cup flour

3/4 cup oil

5 eggs

touch of milk

Vegetables ~ celery, carrot, potato, silverbeet, onion (Celery and onion are too pungent for the kids) I do not use potato as it is too a high GI food. Basically, just use whatever you like.

Cook on 200 degrees for around 3/4 hour.

Well this time I used pumpkin, carrot, peas, cauliflower, red pepper (cut into minute pieces, hehe) and spinach.

As I have mentioned Celtic Dingo has had sensory issues and has not enjoyed most foods. I do not want meal times to be tears and tantrums, so have not pushed the issue, there have been more important things to be honest. I have chosen to make different meals as needed.

I went to a Tony Attwood seminar last year and he mentioned for those ‘fussy’ eaters, their tastebuds change around 8 years old etc. And gave a set of strategies for introducing new foods.

I still have not pushed the issue too much. Slow, little steps.

Well, since Friday and the doctors, we had a good long chat with Celtic Dingo. The doctor had mentioned he needed to try and eat more fruit and veges. I pick up on things whenever I can. One of the strategies I learned ages ago was to say ‘The book says’ ‘The rules are’ so you are not seen to be the bad guy all the time.

So ‘the doctor said’ we need to try to eat more fruit and veges has come out. :)

And Celtic Dingo is trying !!!!!

And he tried the flan !!!!!! Happily. I did it at lunch.

He picked out the red peppers immediately and asked what they were. I told him I was not telling him what was in the flan. It was up to him.

So he sniffed it and licked it. (As Tony suggests) And clicked it was red pepper.

Then he asked me what the pumpkin was. I told him it was dog poop. He laughed. I said, I was not talking about what was in the flan, I just wanted him to try. I knew if I told him, he would think of the bad times with those foods and not even try.

Well, he ate the pumpkin AND LIKED IT !!!!!!! I then told him it was pumpkin and he said ‘I like pumpkin now.’

He picked out the peas. He has gagged on those since a baby. He ate the cauliflower, carrot ….

AND……. drum roll please SPINACH !!!!!!!!

AND…remember this was all mixed in a flan.

All this from a boy who MUST have his food SEPARATED !!!!!!

I clapped every mouthful, and held back the tears. He did gag a little on a mouthful of flan and spinach. I went to get him a drink, but he swallowed it and said he was ok.

He didn’t eat it ALL, but ate at least half which is HUGE for him.

As he gave me back his plate he said ‘I am so proud of myself.’

Not half as proud as I was !!!!!!

I am buzzing.

  1. Um… yeah… sudden need for vodka. Must drink the vodka. Must not move the bottle or maybe slide it a little to the side. Egads, woman… at this hour of the morning I’m wanting to go down bad on that damn vodka!!!!!

We’re going to have to have a wee talk to Scrappygirl about the gym AND the ‘h’ word. That will not do!!!

A huge cyberhug to the magnificent Celtic Dingo. How very mature of him to TRY the different foods. That’s wonderful.

  2. Awesome news about the flan! I’m happy dancing for you.

  3. Wow – he’s going in leaps and bounds now!

    That’s awesome!

    G
    xx

  4. Yes.

So his vege list is now: Potato, pumpkin, carrot, cauliflower, broccoli and spinach.

And from Friday until yesterday, he did not yell once.

This morning, however, I was screamed at about 4 times before 9am.

**Sigh** Gotta take the good with the bad.

  5. Excellent work on the vegie flan, Celtic Dingo and WS ! Yay! Well done! That is sooooo cool to try different foods!
Maybe Celtic Dingo could try a vegie flan next week with another new vegie in it?

  6. great news CD tried it and ate it…you must be thrilled .
How would he go cooking himself.

I despair that one of my boys will eat properly – vegetables …or anything resembling healthy. He likes white rice though the floor always looks like it snowed after wards. He also gags on some things he is eating.

  7. We are trying a similar thing with Boo. Not as far as you yet though. He is just tolerating a small portion on his plate that he doesn’t have to touch.

    Baby steps.

But W00T! For you guys! I KNOW how hard it is. High five-ing you!

  8. that is awesome WS!! I’m so pleased for you!!!

  9. My son is the same with food – he gags on lots of things, especially peas and has gagged on them since he was a baby.

I might have to adopt some of your methods and see if they work for my son. Our Dr has told him that he needs to eat more fruit and veg generally (potaoes, carrots, corn and no fruit doesn’t cut it) but she suggested that we start with green leafy veg so that he isn’t folate deficient.

Oh and can I have a vodka & tonic please :)

  10. oh my goodness, I can so relate. but i felt like such a nut when i cried the last time my son tried a new food. glad to see i am not alone in my emotion about it.

THAT IS SO EXCITING!!!!!!! yaay for all!

and yaay for vodka… AND David Boreanaz. yummy.

  11. PS– my oldest has to have all food separate also. it makes mealtimes SO much more difficult. poor boy won’t even eat birthday cake because he says it is dirty.

  12. Jaynie ~ I can’t stop him now !!!! We were out, so I do a take aways as a treat once a week/fortnight. He said ‘Mum, I want to try something different, I want to try lettuce.’ So he had a chicken burger with lettuce and Mayonaise !!!!! I feel like I am living in an alternate universe. Celtic Lad asked him why he was trying all these new foods. He replied it is because he wants to be healthy. I am beside myself.

Trish ~ He hasn’t really enjoyed cooking. However, I think I will draw him in by doing his home help badge. Part of that is cooking. Now would be a good time.

Kelley ~ High Fives back !!! Good luck with Boo. Having it on his plate is a start !!!!!

    B ~ Thank you ;)

Gemisht ~ **hands over a vodka & tonic but keeps the barman**

Goldie ~ I cry over just about everything !!!! Everytime one of the boys achieves a badge or moves up a grade or ANYTHING, I am the mother with tears in her eyes. lol.
