Sick of being sick

I made the comment a few weeks ago, that this winter had been brilliant for us as none of us had gotten sick. Last winter, every week, or so it seemed, one of us was under the weather.

Well, good old Murphy must have heard me and promptly sent me a head cold.  Just a widdle one. Not enough for me to wail and say I was sick and have people fuss over me, but enough to have me out of sorts.

That was just over 3 weeks ago now, and I can’t shake it. It wavers between really light, and just when I think it will be gone tomorrow, I wake up and I’m all clogged.  I’m over it now.

Every morning, I have the hottest shower I can manage to loosen all the gunge. Then I spend a day of blocked ears, blocked nose, I am just a bundle of joy. NOT.

If the house isn’t overly hot, I am freezing. My skin might be warm to the touch, but my ‘core’ feels frozen.

I have gone through Gawd knows how many rolls of toilet paper (Easier than washing and drying and rewashing and redrying the hankies) Lemsip drinks, Irish Moss cough medicine. Hot fires to keep the house warm. Using scarves and hot water bottles constantly. Head over a steaming hot bowl of water and Vicks.  These are the thing that USUALLY clear me up. Not this time. These have only provided temporary relief.

My cousin suggested fresh ginger, I have some, and am trying to will myself to try it. Ginger makes me gag big time, so the thought of drinking a hot cup of it isn’t exactly a thrilling prospect. My SIL sent me some hayfever tablets and is convinced this will do the trick.

So internet peeps, what remedies do you have that you swear by that you could suggest I try?

Edited to add: Went to doctors.I have an infection and was put on antibiotics. Turns out it wasn’t just a head cold after all.

  1. Nasal sprays – the decongestant type. Usually helps, vicks at night on the chest and a steam vaporisor in the bedroom at night with a heater.

  2. Saline nasal spray,

    garlic and horseradish capsules

vicks on the soles of your feet as well as your chest

  3. I forgot about Vicks on the feet !!!!.

Thanks ladies. Back in from the doc and it isn’t a head cold which explains why all this only gave me temporary relief.

  4. Hanging by your toes from the chandelier should do the trick.
Won’t shift your infection but it’ll give you extra cms in height! :P

  5. Hope you are feeling better once the drugs kick in. I like Jayne’s suggestion – certainly might help to drain your sinus.

  6. Peppermint oil on a hanky on a saucer by your bedside. The evaporating fumes will help to keep you breathing through the night. Lighten up the ginger tea with some fresh squeezed lemon juice and sweeten with honey if you prefer sweet.

  7. A double shot of whiskey, a big spoonful of sugar, lemon juice all in a mug… then add hot water.

Hot toddies may not cure you but they make you feel better for SURE!

I hope you feel better soon!

  8. BAHAHAHA @ Jayne, tried that and the said chandalier and I went CRASHING to the ground !!! lol.

Thanks for all the tips ladies. I will keep them in mind for next time.

The antibiotics seem to be working. :)

  9. Hope you get well soon!
